Living from the Heart

The end of the spiritual journey is an opening of the spiritual heart. Although the physical heart begins opening prior to this point, the spiritual heart refers to the area around the heart as well as the heart itself. This results in the ability to see and experience the world through the “eyes” of the heart, rather than through the mind. In Ramana Maharshi’s method of self-enquiry, we have a knot two finger breadths to the right of the heart, in the fourth vertebra. This is the seat of the soul, and the release of this knot means permanent enlightenment, or a state of clear vibratory flow moving through the whole physical form.

THE HEART BEING THE GATEWAY Those who study the Bible all agree that God’s Spirit and God’s life being in our spirit means that they are in the intuition and fellowship of our spirit, our most central part. But the spirit of man not only has the intuition and the fellowship: it also has the conscience. Hence, God’s Spirit and life, which are in our spirit, also touch our heart When God’s Spirit and life spread from our spirit, they go through our heart.

Therefore, our heart is the key, the gateway. Whether God’s Spirit and life within us can spread to our mind, emotion, and will depends upon whether our heart allows God to pass through it. When a person is saved, God enters into him and becomes one with him. Before a person is saved, he lives in his mind, emotion, will, and conscience. This is where he is. Once he is saved, God enters into him. Which part of him is God in? God is in his spirit. Thus, there is something between God and [133] man.

This something is the heart. Thus, everything depends upon whether our heart is turned to the Lord or away from the Lord. When our heart is turned away from the Lord, then we are turned away from the Lord. When our heart is turned to the Lord, we are turned to the Lord. Second Corinthians 3:16 says, “But whenever their heart turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” Why is it that whenever the heart turns to the Lord, the veil is removed?

The reason is that man’s turned away heart is the veil. If a person has his back toward us, he cannot see us. That is the veil. When the heart is turned to the Lord, man is face to face with the Lord, and naturally, the veil is taken away. Even though many of us are saved and have the Lord in our spirit, our heart often separates us from the Lord. In a sense, the Lord is on the inside, we are on the outside, and the heart is between us, so that we and the Lord cannot be face to face. Thus, everything depends upon where our heart is facing. When our heart is toward the Lord, there are no problems. We and the Lord are face to face. But when our heart is turned away from the Lord, then we are turned away from the Lord, and spontaneously, there is no communication with the Lord. So, the heart is an important gateway.

THE HEART BEING THE GATEWAY FOR THE SPIRIT TO ENTER INTO THE SOUL

When we got saved, God regenerated us, and the Spirit of the Lord entered into our spirit. From then on, this Lord Spirit has been in our spirit and has been trying to spread from our spirit to our soul. In order for Him to do this, He has to pass through a gateway.

This gateway is our heart. The heart is a gateway between our spirit and our soul, joining the spirit to the soul. If the heart does not open the gate and allow the spirit to be released, the Spirit has no way to get into the soul. Therefore, 2 Corinthians 3:16 speaks of the importance of the heart. It says, “Whenever their heart turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” The veil is taken away because the heart turns to the Lord.

This means that in order for us to be face to face with the Lord, our heart must turn to the Lord. Although we have been saved, instead of being toward the Lord, our heart is often toward many things other than the Lord. Because our heart turns away from the Lord, there is a veil between the Lord and us. We cannot see Him, and we are not able to fellowship with Him face to face. This is the situation until the day that our heart turns to Him, and the veil is taken away.

Then we see Him and are face to face with Him. This shows us that the heart is the key.

The fact that the heart is between the spirit and the soul means that the heart is between man and the Lord. If a man’s heart is toward the Lord, he is face to face with the Lord, and he can fellowship with the Lord directly. However, if his heart is toward things other than the Lord and is turned away from the Lord, there will be a veil, a barrier, between the Lord and him. If a person closes his heart to the Lord, he locks the Lord in his spirit. If [139] the heart is turned away from the Lord, the Lord is detained and held in the spirit.
